The Afrika Town community Garden is a community garden by and for Black people in West oakland. The garden nourishes the local community with fresh produce and medicine, and is teaching people cooperative self-sufficiency and self-determination. They are trying to build a counterculture to white supremacy, a shelter from capitalism and a land that's free of exploitation. This garden is one step to combat the displacement of Black/Afrikan people amidst the rapid gentrification of West oakland.
A gentrifying landlord is now trying to bulldoze our garden to resell to luxury condo developers. On March 26th at 1pm a bulldozer and the police showed up to demolish the garden, but we stood our ground and defended the garden until they were forced to turn back! They've organized the community to put pressure on the realtor, and after an onslaught of community support for the garden he temporarily backed down, pending a final resolution. Now they are trying to raise funds in order to be able to save Afrika Town and make it a viable place for all of us. The lot is currently on the market for $995,000.
