In Sierra Leone thousands of plastic bags along with other plastic waste is improperly disposed of every day. Much of this plastic waste comes in the form of water packets. These plastic packets offer a cheap source of drinking water for many people, though are usually thrown away with little thought.
The Department For International Development (DFID) leads the uk's work to end extreme poverty, by creating jobs, unlocking the potential of girls and women and helping to save lives when humanitarian emergencies hit. DFID has funded a number of Wash Facility pilot projects aimed at developing small businesses in waste collection and conversion. These projects are being implemented by Welthungerhilfe with the Bo City Council and Living Earth Foundation with Makeni City Council and are already creating jobs, providing income, and cleaning up the city.
